Because they are often sold as sets that interlock with each other, and not many women want to leave that diamond (of other jewel) sitting at home in a box.

Because the engagement ring is ROCK and the wedding band is well…. a gold band. Would you have her put the engagement ring in a box? Isn’t it supposed to cost 3 mos salary? lol

Mine are a set, so they go together. I sometimes just wear my wedding band, though. I also have a 10th anniversary ring, so sometimes wear all three.

Traditionally the engagement “guards” the marriage. The engagement band is on the outside “protecting” the wedding band. Symbolicly, the period that a people are engaged before marriage helps to ensure that the marriage will be successful. Besides, what woman wants to leave her “rock” at home?

The engagement ring signifies the intent to marry, and the wedding ring the completion of the promise. Some people dispense with the engagement ring, but most women wear both, and as stated previously they are usually designed as a set and are meant to be worn together.
