The ancient Egyptians believed that the vein in the third finger on the left hand lead straight to the heart. Romans stole this idea and began using it to wear wedding rings. They believed the circular shape of the ring represented eternity. The idea that a wedding ring worn on the 3rd finger of the left hand meant the union would last forever.

because you dont count the thumb as a full ring sized finger so u just count the index, middle, and then the ring finger, then the pinky and Ive heard that the reason for the left hand is because the left arm is closest to the heart.
