I dont know. Maybe in years gone by the engagement ring had to be showy so the guy could prove to the girls father that he could afford to support his potential wife. A nice engagement ring meant he had money to spend. I guess this tradition has just stuck. However engagement rings have gotten much more expensive in more recent times. Where I work I deal with a lot of elderly people and the rings are all beautiful but not many would even be a half carat. I guess it is a sign of the times but women are getting greedy and trying to compete with each other wanting bigger diamonds.
I love my ring. it is simple but elegant and half a carat. When I get my wedding band it will have diamonds, because it accents the wedding band and brings out the beauty in my diamond.

I’ve seen seen simple and elaborate engagement rings and wedding rings. In some cases, however, the engagement rings are more elaborate b/c they always have at least one stone, whereas wedding rings need only have the band.

Because it’s the first step in the high committment relationship phase that’s supposed to show the most.
personally i think it’s absolutely silly to spend so much on a stupid ring when you could just spend the money on adding to a fabulous vacation instead.
guys spend so much money on these stupid diamond engagement rings for the women…
and the women don’t spend that money on the men!
what are the guys getting out of it?
it’s just silly and old fashioned. unless she’s giving her virginity to you (in the old age way of christianity and “romance”), diamonds are not needed.

It has a lot to do with tradition. But think of it this way: once the groom-to-be has a “yes” from his bride-to-be, there’s really no need to impress her anymore.

Actually, my engagement ring in much simpler than the wedding ring I picked out.
It’s just a solitaire diamond ring, and my wedding ring is Edwardian and filigreed.

It’s just the tradition really, but it is not a legal requirement and I don’t think the value of the ring = how much a man loves the woman.

The engagement ring is to symbolize your commitment and you ability to came for said girl. I know a lot of people who didn’t even have an engagement ring. They opted to sent a date and spend the money on a great wedding band set

Usually it’s a two-part deal. They get the big diamond as engagement and a matching band to seal the deal, so to speak.
