It’s believed that a major vein (or something along those lines) goes from the ring finger of the left hand straight to the heart.

Read the Wikipedia entries on this, it’s really interesting.
I wear my wedding and engagement ring on my right hand; it’s an old custom from my ethnic background/religion.
A traditional reason to wear the wedding ring on the right hand stems from Roman custom. The Latin word for left is “sinister”, which in addition to this sense also has the same senses as the English word. The Latin word for right is “dexter”, a word that evolved into “dexterity”. Hence, the left hand had a negative connotation and the right a good one.
My husband asked if I would do this – he’s from Eastern Europe, and I did – and it’s been great to wear them on the right hand. The members of his family who are here, as well as lots of other people from his country who are here, all wear their rings on the right.
Turns out when my mom and dad were married here, in 1945, the rings were put on their right hands. However, my mom said she switched hers over to the left hand because it was the norm for everyone else where she lived.

Some places in Europe wear their ring on the right hand but I found this and I thought it was neat..
These fingers don’t separate. It takes both your right and left brain to make you!
The Legend of the Wedding Ring
Put your hands together with only the tips of your fingers touching. Then bend your middle finger so the second joint is touching each other but all the other 4 fingers are still touching at the tips.
Now without moving any other fingers try to pull your thumbs away from each other. The thumbs represent your parents. They were the first that you depended on, they comforted you as a child (picture a baby sucking on it’s thumb) and now they have given you “the thumb’s up” to get married (hopefully). But they are able to separate because as you get older you must separate from them and forge your own path in life.
Then put your thumbs back and try to seperate your pointer fingers. The pointer fingers represent your siblings (and/or friends). They start out life with you, help point you in the right direction when you need advice, and are still a part of your family even after your parents are gone. But they too can separate because even though you will always be in touch they will leave too, to make their own lives and start their families.
Put the pointers back to touching. The middle finger is you. It is tall and proud, and has all of your ‘attitude’
Now the ring finger. The ring finger represents your spouse. Try to separate them without moving any other fingers. It will never seperate, just as your spouse will always be there with you in life.
The pinky is your children. They are the little you. With you for a time but they too must one day leave the nest to make their own way in life

There is a artery in the left ring finger that was believed to lead directly to the heart.

I am not sure when it became a custom, but I do know that you wear them on your left, because it’s closet to your heart. Your heart is on your left side of your chest.
