No metal is really going to keep its shine, owing to everyday use. That patina is a hallmark of the life both you and that band live through.
    For hardness, it’s titanium

Platinum is stronger than gold regardless of color.
Other options are Stainless Steel, Tungsten, Titanium, and Palladium.

tungsten is the ONE kind of band that will never ever scratch at all no matter how rough you are with it
my engagement ring is platinum actually though it is a strong metal but it scratches extremely easily
my band however is white gold and goes amazingly well with my engagement ring but does not scratch quite as easily plus it looks almost identicaal to platinum!!!!

Just take note that the strongest metal means that it cannot be cut off if there is a danger of the ring (and finger) get stuck somewhere, they may end up cutting off the finger to get one of you free!

Platinum is nice, but it scratches easily and you cant get it buffed too often- Ive got visible scratches on mine and Im not even a chef!

Tungsten Carbonate is the strongest but they can NOT be sized, if you or you hubby to be grow (or shrink) you stuck buying a new ring… P.S they are costly as wellhttp://www.1911encyclopedia.org/Tungsten > this is a lot to read but it has alot of info

Tungsten. It is very hard metal. Can’t scratch it or put a dent in it…but you can’t cut it off either…so beware! My fiance picked one out for himself…it’s a sharp looking ring and tungsten is very affordable ( we bought his for under $50, but that was through a jeweller on E-Bay express), we are very happy with it!http://item.express.ebay.com/HOT-8mm-Bru…
    (the one we bought)

The difference is that platinum will always stay white. White gold isn’t really white, it’s an alloy of gold that is yellowish-white and is plated with rhodium that makes it white. The plating wears off. There is also palladium, check that one too…a cheaper alternative to platinum.
Titanium is strong in the sense that they won’t get bent or deformed, but anything with a finish (shiny or matte or satin) will get scratches on it.

My husband wanted a platinum band, so that’s what I got him. When it as new it was shiny and gorgeous, but platinum can get little scratch marks very easily. I didn’t know that prior to buying it, or I would have urged him to pick something else. It shines back up perfectly when you get it polished by the jeweler…but who wants to go to the jeweler every few weeks? Platinum is at an all time high in price right now, if they makes a difference to you.

Tungsten Carbonate or Titanium (white colored). Just talk to your jeweler about it.

Consider stainless steel with a satin finish…my everyday wedding band is stainless steel that has a ‘sandblasted’ appearance-, think of sunlight sparkling on the sand, and it looks like a plantinium band. It wears beautifully and if I’ve collected any minute scratches I can’t tell with the finish….they even make stainless with diamond accents……..then later on you can get a ‘fancy band’ to wear during off work hours….
I don’t make bread, rolls, bagels, donuts, etc anymore (I was a baker in a scratch bakery in NY) but with my house work (I’m anal about my home) and all the gardening and refinishing furniture, painting, and yes baking projects I get into I’m rough on my wedding band so I needed something that’ll stand up to everyday abuse…and I save my fancy band for going out….Good Luck.
