Both. It depends on what the bride and groom wants. If she wants the engagement ring and then a band to go with it, fine. If she wants an engagement ring and then a wedding ring, that’s fine too. Just make sure everything is within budget.

You can choose whatever type of engagement/wedding rings you want; that’s something personal to the people involved. I’ve seen all different types of rings for these occasions. Many times people wear both their engagement and wedding rings, but most of the time people will remove their engagement ring and replace it with a wedding band. Again, it’s completely up to you two.

It’s completely up to the bride. She can do either.

You wear both when you get married, however the wedding ring is the more important one. So some women choose not to wear the engagement ring once married, wear it on a different finger, or use the engagement ring as their wedding ring.

Depends on what the individual wants to do.

I didn’t have an engagement ring (I didn’t want one). But most women I know get the engagement ring first (that is the one with a stone – it doesn’t HAVE to be a diamond) and then get the band which they start wearing after the wedding. Some women continue wearing their engagement rings along with their wedding rings, others don’t. It depends on the individual preference.

I have heard both that the engagement ring goes under the wedding band (because you are never supposed to take it off and therefor the wedding ring slips right over top of it) and also that you are supposed to wear the wedding ring under the engagement (you don’t wear the engagement ring when you get married but you put it back on afterwords.)

My mom told me that it was ok to take your engagement ring off after a few years of marriage, so that’s what i did, maybe about 3 years after i got married. As far as the official tradition, im not sure, but this is what my mom told me ;)

To me, the groom can go purchase all on his own and present the engagement ring to his to be. This is normally the ring with the diamond, or biggest diamond. If you want to take her shopping with you, that is something you can do to. If your rich this is fine, if your not, you might get embarrassed and her too, if she pics something out of your budget. Dont go in debt for these rings, if your on a budget, someday you can update to something else if you should choose to. PS Ive never known anyone not to wear the rings as a set, since traditional wedding rings are meant as a set. If your really strapped on a budget, then do what it takes to satify the needs. but even Walmart sells lovely wedding sets for very very reasonable prices, you do not have to advertise where you bought your rings to anyone.
To start a marriage off trying to pay off the rings, thats too much, you will incur other debts that might be more worthy of debt, cars, appliances, emergencies, medical, children.

Traditionally, the engagement ring is a solitare diamond, to be worn during the engagement. The wedding band is plain metal band, which is exchanged at the wedding ceremony. After the wedding, some women continue to wear their engagement ring with the wedding band, and some women wear just the wedding band. It just depends on the woman, and her lifestyle.

Recently, people have been opting for different gems and styles for the engagement ring. And some people skip the engagement ring altogether. Really, anything goes these days for the rings.

The diamond is traditionally the engagement ring.
The band is the wedding ring.
The band is usually worn on the left hand ring finger FIRST and the diamond on the outside.
This is because romans believed a vein ran from there straight to the heart.

    Nice thought isn’t it.

Typically the engagement ring is a diamond ring (very often a solitaire) and is given to the bride-to-be when she accepts the man’s proposal and the wedding ring is a band that is exchanged on your wedding day.

On the wedding day itself, the ring finger is supposed to be empty – the e-ring can be left home or worn on the right hand during the ceremony and moved to the ring finger after the ceremony. Some folks do have wedding bands with stones in them, such as eternity bands. But its most commonly a plain band ring.

IF the rings are worn together, which is most common, the wedding band is placed on the finger first then the engagement ring – - so the wedding band is closest to the hand and the e-ring closest to the fingertips.

Some e-rings do not sit well with a band so some folks choose to wear the wedding band on their left hand and either entirely take off the e-ring or move the e-ring to their right hand.

Personally, I am wearing my grandmother’s wedding ring through the wedding, and then my fiance plans to buy a seperate engagement ring for me on our one year anniversary. Once I have both rings, I will probably trade them out each day, but would still wear an engagement ring and the wedding band (why hide such beautiful and expensive jewelry) at a time. For example, my grandmother’s ring is yellow gold and the ring from my fiance would be white gold or platinum, so I would trade out which one I wore depending on my outfit/mood each day.

Well, the wedding ring doesn’t have to be a plain band- both my engagement ring and wedding band have diamonds. A lot of women have their jeweler fuse the engagement ring and wedding band together and wear them both… often you can buy a “bridal set” that includes the engagement ring and a wedding band that were made to be worn together. It really is personal preference what you want to do, though.

Often you get a diamond (or other stone) engagement ring, then after you get married you wear a band (which can also have stones) on the inside and the engagement ring next to it. We had trouble finding wedding bands that matched my engagement ring, and if we hadn’t found one, I’d just have taken it off or worn it on my right hand. My aunt has been happily married 20 years, she has an engagement ring, wedding ring, and anniversary ring, somedays she wears all 3, 1 or 2 of them, or none at all. Personal preference.
