   I got both my engagement and wedding rings from Jareds and honestly will never go anywhere else. I’ll be honest, I could have found cheaper items elsewhere but I wanted a better quality piece so was willing to pay the extra to get it. I love the fact that they have a jeweler in store to do repairs as opposed to most stores that make you wait up to 2 weeks for your item back. I am currently in the process of buying a watch from them for my fiance’s wedding present and they’ve been soooo understanding and helpful. I must have changed my wedding band 4 times and they never said anything.
   I worked at Zales for quite awhile and if you want a decent quality ring at a good price that’s a great place to go. All the diamond rings can be discounted another 10-30 percent so don’t seem too eager though, make them work for the sale.
   One last tip. Make sure you get a diamond bond and jewelry protection plan with your ring. They are soooo worth it. The Diamond bond is free just get the paperwork and the protection plans aren’t too much.

   Skip the chains altogether and use a private jeweler. You will get more than a “warranty”, you get a personal relationship for life. Plus you’ll gte the highest quality for your dollar, which only an importer or private jeweler can give you. Find out who your friends and family use, you might be surprised!

   I can only recommend Kay but they are excellent. I would stay away from department stores (JCPenney, Macy’s, etc.), they’re in the retail business not the jewelry business.
   Stick with an actual jeweler.
   The staff at Kay are knowledgeable and they give you their full attention. Plus they have good warranties and financing and an amazing selection. I really like them and recommend them to friends.

   Rogers and Hollands has the BEST warranty out of ALL jewelers. Go there and they will show you how theirs differs from others. Do it!
   Kay is not of high quality diamonds. Don’t go there. Spare yourself.
   Jared DOES have gorgeous rings, but wayyyy over priced. I went with Rogers & Hollands for my ring as well as his band. (White gold, plain, comfort fit). Great price, amazing warranty.

   We went to Jared’s and I am more than pleased, a lifetime warranty for a mere $70 cannot be beat, the warranty details are the most important and theirs is fantastic. They were very reasonable and the rings are gorgoues!!

   Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!
   I purchased a Princess cut diamond with a Platinum channel setting for my wife 7 years ago. We still admire it today! She is a school teacher and is very active with hands. She has never had a problem, yet. I did extensive research before purchasing. I will give you a cliff note version of my conclusion.
   I would stay away from Kay or other big chain stores. Many Sales Associates get paid on commision. They will tell you anything to get the sale. This will be a significant purchase for the both of you. It should be something the both of you cherish for a long time. Do not leave the decision up to someone looking for a commision check. A store that is too big you may be unwillingly paying for a Marketing budget. A store that is too small may not be able to provide you with buying leverage. A good choice will be somewhere in between. The store that I purchased from has three locations and perform repairs/adjustments onsite. Perfect blend!
   When buying the engagement ring focus on the diamond first since that is where the bulk of the money will spent. Then you can have the diamond that you like mounted on the setting that you prefer. I would start with a basic understanding of the “Four C’s” of a diamond “Color, Clarity, Cut, Carrot.” All of these qualities of a diamond will affect the price and quality of the diamond that you select. You do not have to become an expert but just have a basic understanding (see link).
   I recommend the following guidelines:
   Color – “Near colorless” or higher (specifically “H” or higher)
   Cut – “round”, also know as “Princess Cut”
   Clarity – “VS” or higher
   Carrot – what you can afford
   word about the “cut”. The cut is probably the most important characteristic. The “round” cut is the optimal cut for light refraction and therefore provides the most “sparkle”. It will also stay in fashion forever.
   I highly recommend getting a diamond that has a GIA certificate. This will certify it quality from an independent source. if you decide to shop around having determind what “grade” will make aplle to apple comparisons much easier.
   I like your choice of setting. A one diamond with a channel setting is very nice. The small diamonds on the sides should “enhance” the main diamond and not “compete” with it. If possible I would suggest a setting with 6 prongs, especially since you have active hands. A diamond is extremely hard and very unlikely to crack. I would have the prongs inspected at least once a year.
   Be careful about the warranty. I purchased a ruby ring that had a one year warranty. In that year time, the prongs had to be repaired three times. One day the stone fell out. The jewlery store said that they would only pay for the labor and not the stone. They insisted that the prong had been damaged. To make a long story short, be weery of warranties, please. They are not all that they are cracked up to be. My advice, take your ring off when doing work with your hands, get the six the prongs and have them inspected regularly.
   As far as wedding bands go. I suggest a comfort fit style. The have slightly tapered rounded edges.
