My husband had my wedding ring redone a year ago so let me share some experiences we have.
Talk to people you know and find out if they have a jeweler that they recommend. Avoid mall jewelers at all cost. If you don’t have any recommended jewelers, then talk to some high-ended mall jewelers like Bailey, Banks and Biddle to find the name of an appraiser they use. If it’s an outside gemologist, chances are, this person will probably be a jeweler. (That’s how I found my jeweler that I absolutely trust and love.)
In terms of the metal, I personally prefer platinum but it is more expensive than gold. With that said, precious metal price has gone up a lot in recent months so you may wanto to get the cost for both options. Platinum tends to have more of a ‘metal’ look after being worn. White gold will remain a bit more metallic like.
As for what to do with your ring… look around to see if you can find a setting that you’d like. Because if you can find a setting you like, you can have the stones set into a pre-fabricated ring, which will cost you a LOT less than getting a custom ring cast for you. You are looking at probably somewhere around $1,000 – $2500 for a pre-fab setting vs. $600 – $5000 for a custom setting… then you’ll have to factor in the cost of the new stone.
Regardless, don’t let someone pressure you into buying anything. A good jeweler is there to serve you NOT to make you feel guilty or pressured. If you live in the SF Bay Area, I will give you my jeweler’s contact info.

The good news is, you set your own budget for a custom-made ring. However, for a decent quality princess cut diamond alone, you’re looking at $800-$1500. Factoring in the metal, plus time and materials, probably somewhere between $2000 and $3000. You will probably need to put down about half upfront.
With so many diamonds already in the ring, you may not need to have as large a diamond in the center. This could be a chance to save some money. Focus on the other 3 C’s.
    Cheers!

I would consider using some of the diamonds on the engagement ring and some in the wedding band, especially if a lot of the stones are the same size. Come up with a concept first then go to a few independent jewelry stores, not chain stores, and get quotes. I had 2 channel set anniversary style bands made in platinum and it cost $800 each, i supplied the stones, 4 years ago but I got prices ranging from $800-$1600 each at the different stores I went to. You can expect a charge of approx $400 to carve the wax and then labor and materials from there up.

Your best bet is to take all of the rings with you and go to several different jewelry places and get quotes. I’m getting my wedding ring custom made and when you go around, each one of them will explain everything and how it works and you will have opportunities to ask questions. Then, you can go with whichever place seems the best or has the best prices, or whatever is most important to you.

It’s going to be slightly more expensive than usual because the price of gold right now is through the roof. Most expensive it has ever been. But since you are using your own stones you will save much more than if you bought new ones obviously. It’s impossible to estimate because it all depends on what you want. Is it something similar to a setting they have or do they need to make a brand new mold? How complicated is the design? Just settings or are you wanting special filligree work? Is it done in-house or are there elements that must be sent out?
They can reuse the stones but they can’t reuse the gold. What they usually WILL do is give you a credit based on the weight of the gold you bring them. I know because I have one of my mom’s rings I wanted turned into a wedding band and they can’t directly recycle the gold without the ring being very brittle and showing huge divets a few years from now.
I don’t know why you need to purchase another diamond. If you have 20 already how flashy do you want this thing to be! But cost is going to depend on what quality and what size of diamond. To get a pretty accurate value just shop for a solitaire with the diamond you want and add a few hundred for the surcharge the jewlers have on custom work.

probably somewhere between 800 and 1,000…but remember to get it insured ASAP, because with customs you do not get any warranty!
