I read that the average cost in the US of an engagement ring (with diamonds) was about $3400 in 2007 and the cost of wedding bands (no diamonds) was about $700 in 2007. I am sure these prices have come down since then as people are buying lower end to economize. Wedding jewelry should reflect (a) the cost of the diamond (about 70% of the price) and (b) the cost of the metal (e.g. platinum, gold etc) which is related to the daily price of the raw material as these metals change price on a daily basis like currencies.
If you just want a symbol to announce to the world that you are married, a simple band should suffice (about $200 in 18 K gold). If you want an artful ring, I always suggest getting a custom designed ring. You can participate in the design process and they are not more expensive than the brand names in shops! You can find jewelry artisans at etsy.com and many other places
PS: our simple 18K bands (purchased many years ago when the gold price was still 500-600/oz) cost $100 each. Our personal wedding rings…I made them myself!

We spent nothing on rings. My engagement ring was a family heirloom. It has a unique scalloped edge that makes it difficult to wear a band with, so I decided to use the same ring for both my engagement and wedding ring. My husband chooses not to wear a ring, so we didn’t buy one for him. It’s not the cost of the rings that counts, it’s the amount of love in your hearts. Congratulations!

Our wedding bands were pretty affordable. We caught a small sale on my fiance’s ring and got it for $105.
    Mine was $115.
We are not having matching bands – he wanted plain & simple tungsten while I wanted something with some stones in it because I will have to move my e-ring to my right hand (its a funny shape and we can’t afford a custom-made wedding band right now).

my diamond wedding band cost 2000 au so over 1000us (high quality princess cuts over half way around) and his with 2 princess cut diamonds cost 1200au so about 700us…. my engagement ring… lots lots more :)
we’re pretty fortunate and agree to spend well on the most precious piece of jewellery we will be wearing for ever.
But as long as your happy thats what counts!!

By purchasing my husband online we saved a hundred dollars so it ended up being about $300. I just want a simple thin gold band so it was around $80.
