I’m gay and married (to a man). My wedding band is on my left hand.
You might find that closetted gay people wear their band on their right. I noticed a lesbian in my office (who I know had her CP last year) wears hers on the right. She says that it stops awkward questions.

It is true that many gay couples wear their rings on their right hands. (I can’t speak for legally married gay couples becasue I don’t know any.) I know lots of gay couples and some of them wear their rings on the right hand. When my partner and I went to get rings, friends told me about the right-hand thing. The only explanation anyone could offer was…”It’s just a gay thing.” Hmm. Well, the couples I know who do it are not at all closeted and they are great guys. My first reaction was to be pissed off and want to wear my ring on the same side as straight folks – as if to say, damnit, don’t be saying my relationship is less significant than yours!
However, after a while, I changed my tune. I mean, I’m not legally married and I don’t get the oodles of perks and opportunities, and social recognition, etc. that goes with being legally married (it’s not a religious thing, you psycho religious Christ-claiming haters). When I eventually raise a child (against the wishes of many assholes out there), I also won’t have the added stability that a legal marriage provides (just like I don’t have that legal support now). So, for me, if I wear my ring on the other hand, it is a sign of PROTEST, not submission, not a “sign” that I’m gay.
To be honest, though, I frequently forget which hand to put my ring on. Is it correct that straights use the left hand only?

I’ve heard something similar too. When I wanted to get my right eyebrow pierced, the guy said it is for gay people.
Later my friend told me that gay people wear accessories on the right side, ear rings and stuff. Like its supposed to be a sign or something.
So I guess its more like a standard or subtle signal.
    “takes one to know one”.

I’ve never heard that before, me & my spouse both wear or rings on the traditional left finger. We wanted the same recognition as heterosexual married couples & that’s always been the tradition to let others know that you are married.

They should wear it on the left, just like anyone else.
A reason why I think it would be worn on the right is because it gets in the way, if they’re left-handed. Otherwise, do as you wish, I suppose.

I wear mine on my left hand. I think in other countries, like Russia, it is common to wear it on the right. Someone else can correct me on this.

I have my ring on a necklace that I always wear around my neck. She wears her ring on the left.
Everyone else I’ve known wears their rings on the left as well, regardless of orientation.
