I Need Your Opinion About What To Do With My Great-grandma’s Wedding Ring??

Written by Admin on April 13, 2010

My gran gave me her mother’s start anulus as a present. I methodicalness to coiffe it when I impart married. It’s a stark antimonial adornment with an enunciate secernment in the location of the adornment and small lines accomplishment up the sides. It’s noise pretty, but I would aforementioned to add some greyness or platinum accents to it. Do you conceptualise it’s a beatific idea, or should I consent the anulus as is? from a training standpoint, are you supposed to consent adornment as is erst you take it or would it be OK to add it?

Traditionally, if a family member gives you an item of jewelry to keep…it should remain as it was given to you. How would you feel if you gave your grand-daughter your wedding ring and she melted it down to have it designed to her own specifications?? Probably heart-broken. It was a symbol of love for your great-grandmother and shouldn’t be changed in any way.

Heirloom jewlery requires, in my opionion, you to leave it as-is technically. That is, it needs to be easily restored to it’s original state so that as it is passed down it can be passed down unaltered.
That’s not to say that you can’t work with a jewlery designer to create something that the ring can inset into, etc., so that it has an updated look that is more “you” without doing any real harm to it.

My personal opinion is that heirloom jewelry carries with it a responsibility to preserve the heirloom for future generations. Modifying old pieces can de-value them monetarily, and I think, de-values the sentiment. I wouldn’t change it. If it you want to wear a silver or platinum band with it to get the effect of the accent, that would be fine, but I would leave the ring itself alone.

Just because it was her wedding ring doesn’t mean that you have to wear it as your wedding ring. If you would prefer silver/platinum jewelry for your wedding set, get it…it should be about you anyway. You can wear your grandma’s ring on your right hand.

I would definitely not modify it. Your grandmother didn’t give you the ring so you can change it, she gave it to you so can wear it. I think it would be a little insulting if you changed it.

you don’t know what it might be worth, you might take it to antiques roadshow one day and they say it’s one of a kind and worth a million bucks. so leave it alone. probably a good idea to have it appraised for your insurance.

I would leave it alone. As you say, it’s pretty and it’s always okay to mix metallics – at least that’s what Stacy and Clinton say.
