Take it somewhere and ask. The current price of pure gold (which 14kt is not) can be found at http://www.kitco.com

You most likely will not get what it is actually worth if you sell. The person buying it will want to make a profit on the deal. The current price of gold is about $930 a troy ounce. There are about 31.1 grams per troy ounce. 14k gold is about 58% gold. So 930* 6.5*0.58/31.1= $112. You should be able to sell that for about 60% of that or about $68 or if you are exceptionally lucky perhaps $80. If you put it no Ebay you might get a lot more.

We have 2 steps: (1) how much gold is there (2) how much is it worth. I can help you with the first question; the second depends on the going rate for gold.
Karat (k) is a measure of purity of gold by mass (same thing as weight).
24k is 100% pure, 14k is 14/24 = 58% gold. In a 6.5 gm chain, that would amount to 3.77 gm of gold. Since one ounce of gold is 31.1 grams, it is the same thing as 3.77 / 31.1 = 0.1212 ounces.
So there, you have it — 3.77 grams or 0.1212 ounces of gold in that chain. Now, you need the day’s gold price which you can get from yahoo finance pages very easily. Today’s price is $934/ounce so you have approx. $934 * 0.1212 = $113 of raw gold. You can now easily back out the service fee your jeweler is charging based on the quoted price.
If the chain is still fashionable and defect-free, you might consider selling it direct to a prospective buyer — perhaps you could get some consideration for the making costs as well. Just a thought.

Your very best bet is to use http://www.OfflineTreasure.com. When you go to this site, all you have to do is give them your mailing address and they send you a package to send your gold back to them in. It’s nice just to complete their form and have a free pack sent to you ready to go when you find some gold. They are very reputable and always pay me very fast. In fact, I am making a part time income with this place. Every time I get paid, I request another gold pack and then I look for people selling old gold cheap…and then I send it to these guys and make a profit. It’s really easy to do.
