The thing about a certain number of months’ salary is crap.
Only spend what you can comfortably afford; after all the two of you still have the wedding to pay for, and need some money to start your lives together!
I didn’t know the prices when they were bought, but found out later after we were married. My engagement ring was just under 800 and the wedding band close to 400.

I spent £450 on the engagement ring for her, she spent £80 on one for me. Wedding rings are gonna cost about £350 for me, and £200 for her (she’s getting a plainer one than me!)
You’ve heard it from other answers: spend what you want to. 3 months salary is ridiculous (unless, like I was, you’re a student with no income!), but if you have it and want to spend it: it’s yours (and possibly to some extent your future fiancee’s) choice.

I thought it was 3 weeks worth of pay. That’s roughly what my husband paid for mine. Perhaps I was too ‘cheap’!
You pay what you can afford. Personally I think that nobody can tell what a ring costs anyway – unless of course it’s one of those ones with diamond ‘chips’ in it from Argos or similar. I wouldn’t really mind how much mine had cost so long as it was to my taste, and preferrably came from a proper jewellers rather than a value-style high street chain.
Wedding ring is much cheaper as it’s generally just gold without stones. I think my wedding ring was about a third the cost of my engagement ring.

He spent $0 (family heirloom) and I spent $150 for his engagement ring (we got one for eachother).
We just paid for the wedding bands together, they’re made of wood and silver and cost $80 total. We’re just trying to save up money for when we start up. I never really was drawn into this whole spending so much money on jewelry, it’s symbolic.
If you really want to spend 3 months of salary, go ahead. I just feel money could be used for something better, even if it’s donating to charity.

My husband spent about 1500 USD on my engagement ring, and 500 USD on the wedding band, I spent 700 on his wedding band.
I find that 3 mos salary thing sooo obnoxious, if he had done that, I wouldn’t have been comfortable with the purchase. He paid in cash, so no trail of debt into our marriage. He spent no more than he could afford, and just enough to get a ring that he though was perfect for me, and I adore that, its not about the price tag as far as my expectations were.

The whole 2 – 3 months’ “rule” is not a rule at all. It was started by the marketing department of De Beers. Of course the world’s largest diamond seller is going to try to convice you to spend more!
Spend what you can comfortably afford on a style she likes. If that doesn’t suit her, run like hell.
I picked mine out; it was the one I most wanted and it cost $165.00. And for anyone who’s seen my posts about low-cost weddings and wants to get snotty because they think we don’t have any money, well…I don’t, but he does. He could have afforded much more, but this was what I wanted and there are a lot of other things we’d rather do with that kind of money. But for some people it isn’t a choice; they really have to stick to such tight budgets, and that doesn’t make them lazy or uncultured. Not that I’ve seen those posts to that question here yet, but they will pop up, they always do.

I think the ring should be something you go the extra mile for. But you should never go in debt for, or deplete your savings account for. Now for some people going the extra mile is 1k and for Donald Trump its 1m.
My engagement ring was 20k, wedding band 10k, and his wedding band 1k.
I know Ill get thumbs down, but this is our choice and we could afford it.

The value of the rings shouldnt be an issue. If you have money to spend, get her what she likes. But if your doing it for everyone else, dont. we barrowed rings, part of the marrage tradition, it took us 13 yrs to find what we liked, then we spent 700 bucks on each. no engagement ring, just one solid gold ring with lots of shinny things. Good luck in your new life and dont let money come between you and yours

Yeah you should save and spend atlest 3 months of your salary to be able to buy an engagement ring.
My husband prepared for 5 months to buy our wedding rings.
    Here is it. http://vassi.com/search.asp?search=r641ws
but remember to keep in mind that the ring is not as sacred as your love for your future partner.

My engagement ring was £350 and our wedding rings were £200 each.
Not a fortune to most people but a huge fortune to us!
They are very special to me regardless of cost. If they were a million pound they would be no more special!
its not about £££’S its sentiments that count.

no way not 3 month salary!! now a days men usually spend maybe a 2 week paycheck on the engagement ring. or a 1 month pay check. definitely not 3 months. that is crazy.
my fiance spent $1500 on my engagement ring. then our wedding bands were like $200 each.

3 months salary on an engagement ring is the traditional amount but not everyone sticks to that.
My engagement ring was about $13,000 which is just about 3 months take home salary. My wedding Band was $2500

    Engagement ring $1400
    Wedding band $500
My fiance also put these on a credit card and has paid at least $100 dollars a month towards it. We couldn’t afford it all at once, so credit was the way we went.

I don’t know what my engagement ring cost – - I believe it is in the ballpark of $3,000.
Our wedding rings were very reasonable. Both of our rings came to about $120 including shipping so $240 for both.
