Platinum is no more difficult to work with than 18K yellow gold (which is very springy) – but it can very easily become contaminated with silver from the work surface, so look for a jeweller who has fastidious work habits. In my opinion the chance that the piece will become discolored or damaged if the jeweller doesn’t have a special torch means that the job really does require an experienced jeweller and exceptionally careful one at that, so make sure they stand behind their work (in writing).

I would take the ring to a couple of jewerly stores- and go to an nice one (not a mall place). The platinum part is no problem. Where it might have to be reworked it there is a lot of wear to the ring. Like they might have to put platinum back if it’s an old ring and has been worn a lot. And all the prongs and setting should be checked for wear so the stone doesn’t fall out. They can make the ring a couple sizes bigger but it’s not cheap and they can only make it soo big. You should price it out both ways- getting a new band and resizing the old one. And if you are worried about wasting the grandmother’s band- put a different stone in it like a topaz or opal and give it to you mom or sister for Christmas… or keep the ring for your daugther…. Or if it’s soo tiny it’s unwearable you can still have a new stone but it in and make it into a necklace for your soon to be wife. I have seen it done- it’s really neat- they fuse a metal ring to it so you wear it on the side.
