    You need to find how much of the 0.4 oz ring is gold.
    Since it’s 18k, that means it’s 18/24 gold.
    So we can set up a ratio: gold : total
    18/24 = n/0.4
    where n is the amount of gold in the ring
    Cross multiply to get:
    24n = 18 (0.4)
    24n = 7.2
    n = 0.3
    So there 0.3 oz of gold in the ring
    Since it’s $300 per oz:
    300 ($/oz) * (0.3 oz) = $90
    The ring’s value is $90.

    18K gold contains 18/24 = 75% gold.
    75% of 0.4 oz = 0.3 oz gold
    0.3 oz × $300/oz = $90
