its probably just the chemical reaction from the jewelry cleaner, cuz the cleaner that you got is only for diamonds and such
either that or the chain you have is just gold plated and its copper underneath

Fake gold tends to discolor, I know this from experience, anything plated peels and discolors. I think the solution might have done it to the gold.
