i was the type of person who never took the ring off 24 hour a day use.
i also sewed a lot. fabric abrasion is what wears down settings, against the sheets, against clothing.
as a sewer, in 13 years i wore out 3 white gold heads. i got a platinum head and there was no more wearing the prongs down to nubs.
i heard of a lady who worked in a fabric store. she would go through a white gold head every six months and the jeweler couldn’t figure it out. They replaced the head with a subsantial platinum head and she didn’t have any more problems after that.
platinum gets my vote

Stick with Platinum.
Platinum is really nice in that it has weight to it. Though it scratches easily, it can be easily polished too without it wearing out.
Over time, Platinum ends up having a patina look to it. Some people actually like that. It depends on personal tastes. But once again, it can be polished up without wear for that bright shiny look.
Or you can try Palladium. It’s in the same family of elements as Platinum, but costs less. It is also hypoallergenic and can be polished up for that bright shiny look.
I have a Palladium wedding band, and my wife has a Platinum one. They look the same.
White gold depends a lot on a person’s skin chemistry. If the wearer’s skin chemistry is highly acidic, the plating on white gold will be eaten away in time.
Then the ring will have that yellowish look to it. By having it dipped in Rhodium and polished up again, you can have that bright shiny white gold look again. It’s more expensive maintenance, though cheaper in the beginning.
And I usually don’t recommend yellow gold because it will give a diamond a warmer look to it. What’s the point in having a diamond that’s colorless or near colorless only to have it made yellowish by the yellow gold band?!

Honestly, I don’t think there’s enough of a difference in quality to justify spending the additional money on platinum, as opposed to white gold. They look the same, cosmetically, and platinum does scratch much more easily then white gold – which kind of negates the replating argument against white gold (which, as someone said, any reputable jeweler should include in a lifetime guarantee/service plan). Save the money you’d spend on upping to platinum and put it to better use.

I personally prefer white gold, for sure. It will have to be re-rhodiumed at some point, but try to purchase the rings somewhere that includes this service in their guarantee. At Kay’s Jeweler’s, so pay a minimal one time fee at purchase and they will do resizing and rhodium and fixes for LIFE! I get all of my jewelery there and buy the guarantee, it is worth it!

Prefer White Gold (I have white a gold wedding set) & one with white pave’ diamonds. It is not as expensive as platinum & reflects light better (in my opinion).
I own a platinum ring that is not a wedding band which is I wear on my right hand usually with my jeans (it has a blue stone in the center)
Your budget should dictate your final decision-they both are “win-win” choices.

Honestly the quality of most white gold today is crappy-it’s off color so to hide that fact the rings are plated with rhodium…the rhodium wears off and then the poor girl thinks her ring has turned yellowish. It hasn’t-THAT’s the color of the white gold underneath.
Real quality white gold is silvery-gray and NEVER turns any color.
So until the quality of white gold gets better..I would opt for platinum.

if she is not decided between the two you can always think about maybe mixing white gold with a little of gold – i know they do that im not sure how it would look on a wedding band but its a option im sure
but i would prefer platinum or white gold. i believe it just makes the dimond look better if she is concidering dimonds in her wedding band

I can tell you that the platinum will hold up for a long time to come. I am using my now deceased great grandmothers ring that she wore for 65 years and after polishing it up it looks like new. I was told that white gold doesn’t hold up as well. Just a thought for you if you plan to use it as an heirloom some day!
Congrats to you and your soon to be fiancee!

There’s hardly any difference to look at. I have platinum. With white gold they plate it in rhodium to give it the super white look, and that can wear off over time. It is easily redone tho.

If you can afford it go for platinum.
Just means you won’t have to have it re-dipped every year or two.
Plus it is a harder metal so it is less likely to be damaged.

I prefer white gold, but try bringing it up casually in a conversation and see which she prefers. Don’t mention rings though, you’ll give it away.

Platinum is my preference. White gold has to be redipped regularly or it starts to turn yellow.

Platinum is like double or triple the cost of white gold. So we went with white gold because we could not afford platinum.

Aww..I hope she accepts personally I would choose White gold because its just soo beautiful but it can be quite on the expensive side
Good Luck

White Gold, it’s less work to keep it shiney. Platinum scratches easily.
