    One of two things:
    1) A lot of times, you may be able to stretch your ears to the next size up with tapers, but can’t get the actually jewelry in. I don’t know what kind of tapers you have, but if you can leave them in for a few days, try that. Give the holes some time to adjust then try sticking the jewelry in.
    2) If your jewelry is cheap or hand-carved (like made of bone or glass) it may be slightly larger than an 8g. I bought some bone spirals several years ago that were supposed to be 00 at the largest point. When I tried to put in stainless steel plugs, I could only get one in. The other ear wasn’t quite a 00 so I kept a 0 in until I could stretch it to a 00.
When you gauge up, make sure you lube your jewelry and the hole well with something like A&D ointment. Make sure you wash your hands and sterilize your jewelry first. You can also try putting in the new jewelry in the shower or right after a shower. Make sure you clean the ointment off with soap and water so it doesn’t get crusty.
    Good luck, hope that helped!
